How to Remove a Stuck Ring

【Don't Panic!】What to do when a ring gets stuck.
Easy methods using string or soap, and important precautions.

Have you ever had a ring that slid on easily in the morning, only to find it stuck in the evening due to swelling? Or perhaps a ring you haven't worn in a while is caught on your knuckle and won't come off? We've all been there.

Pulling on it forcefully can cause your finger to swell, leading to a vicious cycle where it becomes even harder to remove. Here, we present "3 Steps" recommended by jewelry professionals to safely remove your ring without hurting your finger.

    1. First, "Cool It Down" and "Raise Your Hand"

Before trying to force the ring off, raise your hand above the level of your heart for about 3 minutes. Using gravity helps prevent blood pooling and reduces swelling.

Next, cooling your finger in cold water causes the blood vessels to constrict, making the finger slightly slimmer. Often, this is all it takes for the ring to slide right off.

    2. Use a "Lubricant" to Reduce Friction

This is the easiest method and the gentlest on your skin.

    What you need:
Hand soap, dish soap, baby oil, or hand cream.

    Steps:
Apply a generous amount of lubricant between the ring and your finger. Slowly rotate the ring back and forth, gradually working it toward your fingertip as if you were unscrewing a bolt.

    3. 【Last Resort】The "String (Dental Floss)" Trick

This is a highly effective method when your knuckle is too large and the ring just won't pass over it.

    1. Thread a thin piece of string or dental floss through the gap between the ring and your finger (if there is no gap, using tweezers can help).
    2. Wrap the string tightly around your finger, moving toward the tip (this will temporarily compress your knuckle).
    3. Take the end of the string near the base of the ring and slowly unwind it in the opposite direction from which you wrapped it. As the string unwinds, it will push the ring along with it, moving it bit by bit toward the fingertip.

⚠️ Important: Do not force it yourself

If your finger starts to turn purple, or if you feel severe pain or notice significant swelling, do not push yourself. Seek professional help at a nearby jewelry shop or your local fire station. They can safely cut the ring off using a specialized tool called a "ring cutter."

*We also offer ring cutting services for jewelry purchased elsewhere, as well as assistance with subsequent resizing. Please feel free to contact us if you are in need.
